The Sydney Swans logo uses positive and negative space with the red on the white background. Hierarchy starts with the eye focusing on the black Sydney Swans font first, which then leads the eye down to the red ‘V’ and the white swan. It’s a symmetrical design, equal on both sides. The text Sydney Swans sits on top of the ‘V’ and it kerned out to create a balanced look. The white Sydney Opera House is a motif, which represents one of Sydney’s greatest attractions. Another motif used is the swan, which signify the attributes of the largest flying bird. They are also strong and stay in groups. It’s a simplistic design that is also bold, dynamic and stands out.
Colour and shape stand out to be the main elements used. They help create a bold and dynamic design by using a vivid red contrasting on a white background that forms the bold shape of the ‘V’.
The main principles of design used are stability and dynamics. The stability contribute to a successful design by helping the logo look equal and crisp. The straight lines leading to a dynamic point helps the eye move down the page. There are also dynamic angles used in the points of the Opera House that tie in the design.
The Sydney Swans logo relates to geometric abstract art due to the bold colours and shapes used.
The design concept uses the Sydney Opera House because it’s easily recognisable as Sydney’s biggest landmark attraction. The swan is used to represent the mascot ‘Cyggy’. The red ‘V’ replaces the letter v on their motto ‘Onwards to victory’, which is used on posers.
Overall I think that the design achieves its intentions. It stands out to me a successful design. It uses its principles and elements in a creative way that stands out on a football field.

ReplyDeleteVery observant comments.
Great idea to put the whole design in the context of being 'out on a field' and interesting comments about the sponsors logo obliterating the overall design. It's sad how the bottom line can overtake good design.
Well done!
